After battles between armed groups in Zawiya, which left multiple people dead including civilians, Libyan security forces where deployed in order to maintain the situation.
“We have deployed on the instructions of the supreme military authorities in the zones of combat, and succeeded thanks to mediation efforts by tribal leaders and city elders to halt the fighting” – General Akram Douwa declared to AFP.
Rival factions in the area have been fighting for weeks, on different occasions. According to local sources, civilians were also injured or killed during the clashes.
The North African country, which is awash with weapons, is split between a nominally interim government in Tripoli in the west, and another in the east backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar.
After the last violent clashes that happened in April in the city of Zawiya, residents have took to the streets to protest.
